Destination Wedding

From Filming Love Stories to Living Their Own: A Destination Wedding in Phuket, Thailand

Part of our ongoing editorial series exploring why couples from around the world choose Thailand as the setting for their wedding day, and what the destination offers that nowhere else quite can.

When your profession is documenting love stories across continents, expectations for your own wedding are inevitably high. James and Alesia Hardy, videographers based in Oregon, have spent years capturing celebrations in extraordinary places, yet when it came to choosing a location for their own vows, the decision was immediate and instinctive: Thailand. “We both come from large families, and from the beginning the pressure of inviting a lot of people felt very intense,” they explain.

We wanted to throw a destination wedding and have it be just our closest family and friends in attendance, and it ended up being perfect. Having a destination wedding allowed us to curate the best week-long experience for those who came versus just one day.

That distinction — between a single event and an immersive experience — is increasingly what draws modern couples to Thailand.

For Alesia, the connection was already deeply personal. “I’ve traveled to Thailand multiple times for vacation and it is my favorite country to visit,” she says. “When the topic of a destination wedding came up, I offered Thailand and James immediately said YES. It was a quick decision for us and we were so excited.”
They briefly considered Chiang Mai and Krabi, but ultimately chose Phuket for practical and atmospheric reasons. “We ended up with Phuket because of the international airport and Patong’s nightlife to celebrate our after party,” they share, recognising that accessibility for guests and energy for celebration both mattered.
Their venue, Rosewood Phuket, offered the exact balance they were seeking — lush tropical surroundings paired with modern architectural lines. “The landscape and architecture were the main reason we chose the Rosewood. We loved the jungle vibes, palm trees and concrete jungle-like courtyards,” they explain.

When asked about the feeling they wanted to evoke, the answer was immediate and uncomplicated. “We wanted intimate vibes and we wanted it to feel like everyone there was family, and we’re happy to say that’s exactly how it ended up feeling.”

Thailand’s natural landscape did much of the visual work, but the emotional language of the day came from them. Purple became the anchor of their colour palette, not as a trend choice but as a story. “James’s family color is purple. Purple means loyalty, and his childhood best friend once told him that his aura was purple and it stuck. When we talked about our main colour palette, we wanted the main color to be purple for this reason.”

As self-confessed food lovers, they knew cuisine would define the guest experience

We had a traditional Thai dinner that was truly delicious and unforgettable and was a huge part of the experience we wanted for our guests because we are foodies. Mango sticky rice and the duck with chili glaze were the highlights of the menu

Florals are also on top of the list of things to remember forever. “The arch that was built was everything I had always dreamed of. Seeing it for the first time walking down the aisle with my husband standing underneath it was incredible.”

Planning From Afar — With Ease

For many couples, distance is the greatest hesitation. For James and Alesia, it became one of the greatest surprises. “What surprised us most was how hands-off it was compared to the U.S. The team at The Wedding Bliss Thailand did all of our calls and we didn’t have to speak to any other vendors, which was really relaxed.” They approached guest logistics with the same clarity. “We made a week-long itinerary and listed accommodations and things to do for everyone through a private link,” they share, noting that their guests still talk about the trip to Thailand to this day.

Their advice to couples considering a wedding abroad is direct and reassuring.

Get someone with incredible reviews and don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for a catch-up call. Those catch-up calls felt great as a bride anticipating her day, and my planning team made me feel comfortable enough to speak up for what I wanted.

Beyond the ceremony, Thailand offered something expansive. “We did a Phi Phi Islands tour with the bridesmaids and an elephant tour and a temple visit with our videographer. Our main thing every day though was shopping in Patong with our families,” they say, describing a celebration that unfolded across landscapes and experiences rather than remaining confined to a single location.

When asked to distill the entire celebration into a single word, their answer is immediate: “Unforgettable” – or as we now like to put it – “Unphukettable.”

For couples around the world, Thailand offers what James and Alesia found so instinctively — the ability to gather only those who matter most, to stretch a wedding into a shared adventure, to combine culinary excellence with architectural beauty, and to plan from afar without surrendering control.

Even for professionals who spend their lives filming extraordinary celebrations, Thailand was not simply beautiful; it was personal, immersive, and entirely their own.
